THE LOCKED FIST

Make a relaxed fist feel sealed shut for one impossible moment.

WHAT THEY SEE

The participant closes one hand into an ordinary fist, but when asked to open it the fingers appear to stay locked in place as though an invisible clamp is holding them closed.

WHAT YOU SAY
Close one hand into a comfortable fist and keep the wrist loose. Notice how naturally those fingers fit together. Imagine a strong invisible clamp closing around the fist, holding every finger exactly where it is. The wrist stays relaxed, the arm stays relaxed, but the fingers themselves feel locked into that shape. In a moment, give the fingers one gentle attempt to open and notice the strange feeling that the fist would rather stay closed. Test it now... gently... and notice that lock holding for just a moment. Perfect. Stop testing. And now the clamp releases completely — open the hand, stretch the fingers, and relax.
HOW TO DO IT
  1. Have the participant rest the forearm comfortably and make a normal, gentle fist.
  2. Make sure they are not squeezing hard. The hand should look relaxed rather than tense.
  3. Direct attention to the contact between the fingers and palm, then introduce the image of an invisible clamp or seal.
  4. Emphasise that the arm and wrist remain loose while only the fingers feel locked. This helps prevent unnecessary muscular effort.
  5. Allow several seconds for the suggestion to settle.
  6. Ask for one gentle attempt to open the fist for a second or two.
  7. If the fingers hesitate or remain curled, reinforce it once and stop the test before it becomes a contest.
  8. Release the suggestion and have them spread and wiggle the fingers to show a complete return to normal.
MAKE IT LOOK RIDICULOUSLY GOOD
THE SHOWMAN’S EDGE
01Start by showing that the fist is not clenched tightly. A relaxed-looking hand makes the later lock much more puzzling.
02Keep your language focused on the fingers, not the whole arm. That makes the effect look controlled rather than like general tension.
03During the test, watch their face and let the audience see the surprise before you say anything else.
04Do not ask them to prove it repeatedly. One clean failure to open is enough.
05Use the word ‘release’ at the end and open your own hand at the same moment as a subtle visual punctuation.
06After the fingers open, let the participant look at their hand for a second. That reaction often sells the effect better than any line you could add.
Keep the fist gentle and brief. Never encourage hard clenching, cramping or forceful finger extension.
