YOUR TRICK
THE FLOATING ARM

Make one arm begin to rise as though invisible helium balloons are lifting it.

WHAT THEY SEE

The participant sits comfortably with both hands resting loosely. One arm begins to feel lighter, then slowly lifts away from the lap with surprisingly little conscious effort — as though something above it is pulling it upward.

WHAT YOU SAY
Sit comfortably and let both hands rest loose and heavy for a moment. Now focus on this arm and imagine a bunch of helium balloons tied gently around the wrist. You do not need to lift it. Just imagine those balloons becoming lighter... and lighter... pulling upwards. Notice the smallest change first — maybe a finger, the wrist, or the whole hand beginning to feel different. That’s it. Let the arm discover how light it can become all by itself. And as it rises, imagine the balloons lifting even higher. Perfect. Now imagine the strings being released and let the arm drift comfortably back down.
HOW TO DO IT
  1. Have the participant sit with their back supported and both hands resting naturally on their thighs.
  2. Choose one arm and ask them to look loosely at the hand rather than stare hard at it.
  3. Create a vivid image of several helium balloons attached around the wrist. The image of upward pull is more important than telling them to physically lift.
  4. Tell them specifically that they do not need to help. Invite them to notice the first tiny change in fingers, wrist or forearm.
  5. Wait several seconds. Small ideomotor adjustments often begin before the whole arm moves.
  6. As soon as you see any upward movement, reinforce only what is already happening: ‘That’s it — let it become lighter.’
  7. Allow the rise to continue naturally for a short distance. There is no need to push for shoulder height.
  8. Finish by suggesting the balloon strings are released, then let the arm return gently to the lap and relax.
MAKE IT LOOK RIDICULOUSLY GOOD
THE SHOWMAN’S EDGE
01Sit slightly to the side rather than directly in front so everyone can clearly see the gap forming beneath the hand.
02Do not touch the arm once the suggestion begins. The lack of contact makes the movement look far more impressive.
03Talk less once the hand starts moving. Silence makes a slow rise feel deliberate and mysterious.
04Watch the wrist, not just the whole arm. The first visible lift often starts there and gives you the perfect moment to say ‘there’.
05Use upward language — lighter, higher, floating, lifting — but avoid repeating yourself so much that it becomes obvious coaching.
06Stop while the movement still looks clean. A ten-centimetre rise that happens naturally is stronger than forcing a dramatic lift.
07When the hand returns, simply smile and move on. Do not ruin the moment by explaining every muscle movement.
Keep the participant seated and comfortable. Stop if there is shoulder, elbow or wrist discomfort, and never force the arm higher than it wants to move.
